The Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, NY, transformed into a vibrant hub of celebration on Monday, June 1, 2026, as it hosted its annual Rambling Rose Gala. This year’s event, held under the terrace of the Visitor and Administration building, was a resounding success, raising an impressive $205,653.15 for the garden’s educational and cultural initiatives.
The gala, which marks the garden’s largest fundraising event of the year, brought together community members, local dignitaries, and nature enthusiasts to celebrate the beauty of peak rose season. The evening was filled with guided tours of the rose garden, live jazz performances, and a silent auction, all set against the backdrop of the garden’s stunning botanical collections.
Honoring Local Heroes and Community Leaders
The event also served as a platform to recognize the contributions of two notable figures in the Flushing community. Howard Freilichfounder of Blondie’s Treehouse, Inc., was honored for his dedication to horticulture. Freilich, who began his career as an intern at the Queens Botanical Garden, made a significant pledge to support internships in the garden’s horticulture department over the next five years.
Another honoree was Yanny ‘Mama’ Liea beloved member of the Queens Botanical Garden’s Tai Chi group and a key figure in the Flushing community. The recognition of these individuals highlighted the garden’s role as a community hub that fosters connections and shared experiences.
Supporting Educational and Cultural Initiatives
The funds raised from the gala will be instrumental in supporting the garden’s educational programming and cultural eventsas well as enhancing its botanical collections. Under the guidance of the new Horticulture Director, Andi Pettisthe garden aims to continue providing a beautiful and engaging space for the community.
Attendees included prominent figures such as Queens Botanical Garden Board Chair Raymond D. JasenNew York City Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya VijNew York City Council Member Sandra Ungand Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. Richards emphasized the garden’s inclusive nature, stating, ‘That’s what democracy looks like.‘
