The Nature Bus service in Ulster County is back for another season, offering residents and visitors a free and convenient way to explore the region’s stunning natural attractions. Starting on Saturday, June 6, 2026the service will run every Saturday through the end of September, connecting people to some of the most beautiful parks and preserves in the area.
This initiative, launched by Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger in partnership with Ulster County Area Transit and the county’s Department of Tourismaims to eliminate transportation barriers and make outdoor recreation more accessible to everyone. The Nature Bus Routes
The Nature Bus service operates on two main routes: the Ridge Route and the River Route. Each route serves different areas of the county, ensuring that a wide range of parks and preserves are accessible to all.
The Ridge Route
The Ridge Route serves the communities of New Paltz and Ellenvillewith pickup locations at the New york state Thruway Park and RideNew Paltz GardensNew Paltz Trailwaysand Liberty Square in Ellenville. Destinations on this route include the Mohonk Preserve Testimonial Gate Trailheadthe Mohonk Preserve Visitors Centerand the Minnewaska State Park Preserve.
The River Route
The River Route departs from Kingston Plazawith a stop at Garraghan Drive. Riders can travel to Sojourner Truth State ParkKingston Point BeachBlack Creek Preserveand the Walkway Over the Hudson State Park. This route offers a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to swimming and picnicking.
New Additions and Enhancements
This year, the Nature Bus service is introducing some exciting new features. One of the most anticipated additions is public access to Lake Sophia at Sojourner Truth State Parkwhich is expected to open on June 27, 2026. This new swimming area will be the first public swim facility built in a New York state park in two decades, accommodating up to 480 swimmers and featuring a shallow swim area connected to a 20-foot-deep swimming section.
In addition to the new swimming area, all Nature Bus routes will continue to offer free admission to the parks and preserves they serve. This makes it easier than ever for residents and visitors to enjoy the great outdoors without worrying about transportation or entry fees.
