The city of New York is gearing up for an extraordinary event as President Donald Trump attends the Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. The presence of the President has prompted extensive security measures, significantly impacting the area around the iconic arena.

Starting at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, vehicular and foot traffic will be restricted from West 30th to West 35th streets between Sixth and Eighth avenues. These measures are crucial to ensure the safety of all attendees and the smooth conduct of the game.

Enhanced Security Measures for Game 3

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service New York Field Office Matt McCool announced that there will be no watch party outside Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals. This decision is aimed at maintaining a secure environment given the President’s attendance.

“There will unfortunately be no watch party outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the finals, and no access to the immediate vicinity of MSG without an authorized reason to be there,” stated Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a briefing at One Police Plaza.

Security Perimeter and Entry Points

The NYPD will establish a security perimeter encompassing West 30th to West 35th Streets, between Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Seventh and Eighth Avenues will be closed to both traffic and pedestrians starting at 4 p.m. on Monday. Commuter access to Penn Station will remain open, ensuring minimal disruption to public transportation.

“If you have reason to be in the secure area, you can enter at one of five designated entry points where screening will occur,” Tisch explained. These entry points are strategically located to facilitate smooth access while maintaining security.

Airport-Style Screening and Security Procedures

Attendees can expect a high level of security, similar to that of an airport. All fans will pass through TSA-style magnetometer screening before entering the arena. Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool emphasized the importance of arriving early, recommending that fans arrive at least two hours before tip-off.

“All attendees will pass through TSA-style magnetometer screening before entering the arena. I strongly encourage fans to arrive at MSG at least two hours before tip-off,” McCool said. “There is a strict no-bag policy in place, and there will be no storage for prohibited items outside the venue.”

The security measures also include the use of drones and advanced counter-drone technology, protective intelligence, specialized tactical teams, and operational resources. These measures are designed to identify and address potential threats while maintaining a welcoming environment for fans.

Alternative Watch Parties for Knicks Fans

While the watch party outside Madison Square Garden has been canceled, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has arranged alternative watch parties at Bryant Park and Wollman Rink. These locations will accommodate up to 5,000 fans, ensuring that the excitement of the game can be shared by many.

“We are very much looking forward to bringing back watch parties at the Garden for game four on Wednesday night,” Tisch added, indicating that the usual festivities will resume for the next game.
