The city of New York experienced a tumultuous weekend with two significant incidents that have left authorities and residents on edge. Violence erupts at Knicks watch party
Thousands of fans gathered across New York City to watch Game 3 of the NBA Finals, with official watch parties held at Bryant ParkWollman Rink in Central Parkand Brooklyn Bowl. Fans were required to register online in advance to attend these events.
Many had hoped for a watch party outside Madison Square Gardenbut heightened security measures due to President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game made that option unavailable. After the Knicks’ loss, fans spilled out of Bryant Park onto neighboring streets, leading to fights and disorderly conduct.
The chaos resulted in 21 arrestswith eight individuals charged with offenses including assault on a police officerassaultcriminal possession of a weaponmenacingresisting arrestand obstructing governmental administration. Thirteen others received criminal court summonses for disorderly conduct.
Crowds flooded 42nd Streetsurrounding cars and cabs, and jumping on them. Some fans threw beer bottles at officers and used lightsabers and other objects to hit windshields. A bus sign was knocked down and later used as a weapon in a fight. One individual set fire to a Spurs t-shirtleading to a chase involving San Antonio fans.
Authorities respond to the unrest
PBA President Patrick Hendry issued a statement condemning the behavior, stating, “Last night was another shameful display from individuals who are more interested in brawling with each other, ripping up street signs, and hurling objects at cops than supporting their team.”
The NYPD plans to replicate Monday night’s security perimeter during Game 4closing major streets bordering Madison Square Garden to prevent crowds from blocking traffic. While a watch party will be allowed outside the arena, it will be inside the perimeter with New Year’s Eve-style checkpoints and penning.
A City Hall spokesperson commented, “New Yorkers are understandably passionate about the Knicks, and the overwhelming majority of fans watched the game last night in ways that were both safe and fun. But the fights and other disruptive incidents – including assaults on police officers – in various parts of the city are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Stabbing incident at Penn Station
In a separate incident, five people were injured in a stabbing at Penn Station on Sunday evening. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on the NJ Transit concourse.
One person suffered a serious injurytwo suffered moderate injuriesand the rest suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. The suspectconsidered emotionally disturbedwas arrested by Amtrak police.
