On Thursday, June 11, 2026, the locomotive will make a highly anticipated stop at Letchworth State Park. Park manager Douglas Kelly highlighted the uniqueness of this event, noting that the train will cross the iconic Genesee Arch Bridgea sight not to be missed.
Preparations for the Big Boy’s Arrival
Letchworth State Park is gearing up for what promises to be one of its busiest days of the year. Kelly anticipates large crowds starting as early as 6 a.m. and has implemented several measures to manage the influx of visitors. The Portageville gate will close overnight on Wednesday, and part of the roadway will be used for parking, requiring some visitors to hike to optimal viewing spots.
“We’re trying to navigate the traffic that we’re expecting,” Kelly said. “We want to facilitate as many people as possible to come in and see the train.” Once approximately 1,000 vehicles fill the area, the park will reach capacity, so visitors are advised to have a backup plan.
Optimal Viewing Spots
For those planning to witness the Big Boy’s crossing of the Genesee Arch Bridge, several viewing spots are recommended. The Upper Falls area is expected to be a prime location, but other spots like Inspiration Point and the Glen Iris Inn also offer excellent views. Park visitor Rich English suggested that being as close as possible to the locomotive when it crosses the bridge will provide the best experience.
Additional Stops and Viewing Opportunities
The Big Boy No. 4014 will also make a stop at the Hornell Erie Depot Museum at 2 p.m. on Thursday. This additional opportunity allows more people to witness the historic locomotive up close.
The Big Boy’s schedule includes an arrival in Silver Springs, Wyoming Countyat 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, with a departure by noon. The train will then proceed to Letchworth State Park, where it is scheduled to arrive at 6 p.m..
