The annual Juneteenth celebration on Buffalo’s East Side has become more than just a commemoration of freedom. This year’s event, hosted by Community Access Services on Bailey Avenue, transformed into a vital hub for health awareness and community engagement.

For the sixth consecutive year, the organization brought together residents, health professionals, and community vendors to create an inclusive space focused on wellness and connection. The event featured free rapid HIV testing, live music, family-friendly activities, and a variety of local vendors, all aimed at addressing critical health disparities in the 14215 zip code.

Breaking down barriers to healthcare access

Community Access Services, a nonprofit dedicated to improving healthcare access and combating the HIV epidemic in communities of color, designed the event to eliminate barriers that often prevent residents from seeking necessary care. Social determinants of healthsuch as transportation challenges, housing instability, and financial constraints, can make it difficult for individuals to access healthcare services.

Kim Brown, executive director of Community Access Services, emphasized the importance of bringing resources directly to the community. “We bring partners to the community to bring resources that folks may not necessarily always have access to on a daily basis right to their neighborhood,” Brown said. This approach ensures that residents don’t have to leave their communities to receive the care they deserve.

Empowering residents through health education

Rosyln Blackmon, a resident of Buffalo’s East Side, shared her perspective on the event’s significance. “Health is wealth,” Blackmon stated. “If you go to the doctor, get a checkup, you’ll be able to live a healthy life. You don’t have to struggle through the ups and downs and the pains, the ins and outs. So, it’s in the community, right at your hands. Get help — if you don’t go, you can’t get help.”

The event’s interactive format allowed residents to engage with healthcare providers, learn about preventive measures, and access essential services in a familiar and supportive environment. The presence of bounce houses, a food truck, and a DJ created a festive atmosphere that encouraged participation and community bonding.

Building a healthier future for Buffalo’s East Side

Community Access Services’ commitment to expanding healthcare access extends beyond the Juneteenth celebration. The organization is planning a new health hub at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Kensington Avenue. This hub will provide primary care services and a pharmacy, addressing what leaders describe as a pharmacy desert in the neighborhood.

“It feels really, really beautiful inside and out to see everybody out gathering, trying to get information, and care about themselves,” Blackmon said. The event’s success highlights the power of community-driven initiatives in promoting health and wellness. As Buffalo’s East Side continues to grow and evolve, events like these play a crucial role in fostering a healthier, more connected community.
