The School Tax Relief (STAR) program is gearing up to deliver substantial tax relief to eligible homeowners across New york state. With over $2 billion in benefits to be distributed, this initiative promises to ease the financial burden on nearly 3 million residents. As the summer of 2026 unfolds, homeowners are eagerly awaiting their share of this relief.

Governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized the importance of the STAR program as part of a broader effort to support New Yorkers. “The start of summer is also the start of STAR tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” she stated, highlighting the program’s role in putting money back into the pockets of residents. The STAR program offers two types of benefits: the STAR credit and the STAR exemption.

Understanding STAR Benefits

The STAR credit is designed for homeowners who meet specific income criteria. If you are registered for the STAR credit, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will issue your benefit via check or direct deposit. This credit can be used to pay your school taxes. To qualify, your home must be your primary residence, and the combined income of the owners and their spouses must be $500,000 or less.

On the other hand, the STAR exemption is a reduction on your school tax bill. If you have been receiving the STAR exemption since, you can continue to do so for the same primary residence as long as you remain eligible. However, the STAR exemption is no longer available to new homeowners.

When to Expect Your STAR Credit

Check deliveries have already begun and will continue statewide throughout the summer and fall. Homeowners in areas like New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, where school tax due dates are in late June and July, will receive their benefits soon. For other parts of the state, benefits will roll out through the summer and fall.

To track your check delivery or enroll in direct deposit, visit the STAR Resource Center at ny.gov/STAR. Enrolling in direct deposit ensures timely receipt of your benefit. Homeowners should sign up at least 15 business days before their local school tax due date to guarantee delivery by direct deposit.

Maximizing Your STAR Benefits

Starting in July, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is holding regional STAR Seminars. These sessions provide valuable information on how to sign up for STAR and maximize your benefits. The first session is scheduled for Erie County on July 7with more sessions planned throughout the summer.

During these seminars, attendees will learn about the program’s history, what to expect if they are already enrolled, and steps to enroll if they are new homeowners. The seminars also cover common FAQs and offer on-site assistance for new homeowners to register at self-service kiosks. Each event is open to the public, and preregistration is not required.

Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance encourages all eligible homeowners to take advantage of the STAR program. “We want every eligible homeowner to take advantage of the STAR program,” she said. “If you’re a new homeowner, or you are currently not receiving a STAR benefit on your primary residence, check out the Tax Department’s website to see how you can register and start saving.”

Most homeowners eligible for a STAR credit will receive a check between $350 and $600. Seniors eligible for an Enhanced STAR credit can expect a check between $700 and $1,500. These benefits provide significant relief and are a crucial part of New York’s efforts to support its residents.
