The bustling commercial area known as The Hub in the South Bronx has long been a hotspot for drug activity. On Monday, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed the successful disruption of five major drug trafficking networks operating in this area.
The operation, which spanned from June 9th to June 11th, resulted in the arrest of 27 defendants and the seizure of substantial quantities of illegal drugs, including 30 pounds of fentanyl12 pounds of crystal methamphetaminesand 1 kilogram of cocaine. Additionally, five firearms, including a ghost gun and a defaced revolverwere confiscated.
The Hub: A Hotspot for Drug Activity
The Hublocated at the intersection of East 149th Street, Third Avenue, Melrose Avenue, and Willis Avenue, has been an epicenter for drug useparticularly fentanyl. The area, bordering the neighborhoods of Melrose and Mott Haven, has seen a significant deterioration in public safety due to the open drug trade.
District Attorney Clark emphasized that the problem has been systemic and long-standing. “This is not something that just started,” she stated. “Because there wasn’t enough attention paid to it, it deteriorated to this.”
A Year-Long Investigation
The investigation, which began in, was a collaborative effort between the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD Narcotics Borough Bronx Major Case Unit. The operation targeted five distinct drug organizations: PradaBugattiTikTokBrookand Ghost.
Commissioner Tisch highlighted the strategic approach of the drug rings, noting that they avoided open violence to evade police detection. “The defendants and their suppliers are heard on wiretaps, speaking about their brands.as being too strong and causing people to fall down,” Clark added.
The Impact on the Community
The disruption of these drug networks is expected to have a significant impact on the community. Congressman Ritchie Torres and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibsonalong with other local officials, have been instrumental in addressing public safety concerns in the area.
Pedro Suarez, Executive Director of the Third Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), noted that while this is a milestoneensuring a lasting impact is crucial. The operation has already led to a noticeable improvement in the area, with residents like Amelia Moore observing that “it’s gotten better.”
Commissioner Tisch reported that major crime in the Bronx has decreased by 11% in the first five months of 2026, with a 14% drop in the newly created Patrol Borough Bronx South. Murders have also decreased by 9% borough-wide and 33% in the South Bronx.
The operation has not only targeted the supply side but also aims to address the demand for drugs. Clark emphasized the importance of providing resources to those in active addiction, acknowledging that “there’s still going to be a demand for the drugs.”
