A Severe Lakeshore Flood Warning is in effect for the lake Ontario shore of Oswego and Jefferson counties in New York, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The warning is expected to remain in effect until 8 PM EDT today.
The warning indicates that minor lakeshore flooding may occur along the immediate lakeshore, particularly in bays, inlets, harbors, and other low-lying areas. Elevated water levels are also possible along the upper Saint Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region. The combination of high lake levels and significant wave action could result in shoreline erosion.
For safety, contact emergency services at 911 if needed. The NWS advises staying off breakwaters, piers, rock outcroppings, and beaches, as waves may be larger than they appear and can easily wash people away. Expect significant beach erosion and debris, local road closures, and extremely dangerous boating conditions. Residents should also be prepared for potential local road closures and avoid unnecessary travel near the shoreline.
