In a dramatic turn of events, a barricade situation in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklynescalated into a tragic confrontation on the morning of June 19, 2026. The incident, which began around 5:45 a.m.ended with a veteran nypd officer injured and the suspect, identified as Lamin Simmonsdead.
The standoff at 190 Kosciuszko Street involved Detective Matthew Galea 15-year veteran of the Emergency Service Unit (ESU)who was shot in the left leg. The incident highlighted the bravery and challenges faced by law enforcement in high-risk situations.
The Morning’s Events Unfold
The situation began when neighbors reported hearing seven gunshots around 5:45 a.m.. Responding officers from the 79th Precinct encountered a man armed with a firearm inside a two-story brownstone. The suspect’s wife and son were able to leave the apartment safely, but an elderly couple on the floor above remained trapped.
As the standoff continued, the suspect, Simmons, began throwing large objects out of a rear window, including a microwave, lamp, pots, and pans. A drone confirmed that Simmons was armed and continued to fire his weapon. The Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to establish dialogue but was unsuccessful.
The Critical Moment
Just before 9 a.m.ESU officers entered the apartment and found Simmons at the top of the stairs on the same floor as the elderly couple. Despite orders to drop his gun, Simmons fired at the officers, striking Detective Gale. In response, at least four officers returned fire, hitting Simmons, who was later pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.
Gale, who suffered a tibial fracture in his left leg, was taken to Kings County Hospital. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that Gale was in good spirits and stable condition, although he would require surgery and several days of treatment.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between Simmons and the elderly couple. Simmons, a 48-year-old with a history of mental illness, had prior interactions with the police, although his record was mostly sealed.
A neighbor spoke to the media about Simmons, expressing shock and sadness. “That was my neighbor. I watched him raise his sons, he has twin boys. I don’t know what could’ve transpired that could’ve led up to this,” the neighbor said.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Tisch addressed the media, praising the bravery of the officers involved. “What this officer from ESU did this morning, Detective Matthew Gale, is what so many officers do each morning,” Mamdani said. “He put on his uniform, he left his house, he said goodbye to his family, and he went to his job to keep our city safe.”
The NYPD recovered two weapons at the scene, a Beretta handgun and a Jimenez Arms.380 caliber handgun. It is unclear which weapon was fired during the standoff.
