The early hours of Sunday morning brought chaos to the quiet town of Brockport, New York, as a massive apartment fire erupted, displacing 30 residents and causing significant disruption. The incident, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m., saw a swift response from multiple fire agencies, highlighting the critical importance of preparedness in such emergencies.
The fire, reported at 3640 Lake Road near I-104 West quickly escalated, prompting the closure of Lake Road between West Ridge Road and Burch Farm Drive. The road was reopened early Sunday afternoon, allowing residents to assess the damage and begin the process of recovery.
The Fire’s Impact and Immediate Response
Resident Jamis Austin who lives on the second floor of the affected building, recounted the harrowing experience. “There was smoke in the hallway, and people started running all around,” Austin said. “We realized that it wasn’t a drill or anything like that.” The immediate concern for Austin and his family was ensuring their safety, particularly that of his 2-week-old baby.
The Monroe County 911 center received four separate calls reporting the fire, with the first arriving apparatus finding a heavy fire load. The Brockport Fire District (BFD) was quickly joined by 15 fire companies from Monroe, Orleans, and Genesee Counties, including Hamlin-Morton-Walker, Hilton, Spencerport, and others. This coordinated effort was crucial in managing the blaze and ensuring the safety of all residents.
Rescue Efforts and Community Support
Four residents were treated on the scene by emergency medical services and later released. Notably, one resident had to be rescued by firefighters, underscoring the dangers posed by such incidents. In addition to human residents, two cats and one iguana were also safely rescued, highlighting the importance of pet safety in emergency situations.
The fire affected 21 units displacing a total of 30 people. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross stepped in to assist the displaced residents, with the BFD also providing immediate shelter at their station. The community’s support was evident, with Austin noting, “The community here has been great, and very supportive of the hardship that everybody has suffered through this.”

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau’s Fire Investigation Unit. As of now, the cause is undetermined, leaving residents and authorities awaiting answers. The recovery process is expected to be lengthy, with displaced residents needing to find temporary accommodations and begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
