The quiet Wednesday morning in Congers was disrupted by a dramatic fire and explosion at an industrial building on Wells Avenue. The incident, which began just before 8 a.m., drew a substantial emergency response and prompted evacuations in the area.
The building in question, located at 125 Wells Avenue, houses Vitane Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, a manufacturer of nutraceuticals and dietary supplements. The fire, which produced heavy smoke, was initially reported by a concerned caller to 911.
The incident and emergency response
As firefighters from the Congers Fire Department arrived on the scene, they were met with thick smoke billowing from the building’s entrance. The presence of food-grade chemicals used in the production of vitamins and dietary supplements raised concerns, leading to the activation of the Rockland County HazMat team for support.
During firefighting operations, a significant explosion occurred inside the building. Authorities reported that the blast was likely a “smoke explosion” that happened as conditions inside the building worsened. The explosion resulted in a partial floor collapse and increased smoke conditions. Fortunately, all firefighters had been evacuated from the building prior to the explosion and were able to continue battling the blaze from a safe location.
As a precaution, Clarkstown Police evacuated approximately 200 residences and 12 commercial properties in the immediate area. The police also coordinated with the Clarkstown Central School District to ensure the safety of students and staff during the incident. The evacuation remained in effect for about an hour and 20 minutes before being lifted after air quality monitoring confirmed safe conditions.
Damage and investigation
The industrial building suffered extensive damage, including heavy smoke and fire damage, particularly in the manufacturing area. Rockland County Fire Coordinator Chris Kear noted that the building had sustained a lot of smoke damage, with the manufacturing area seeing significant heat and fire damage.
“At some point, we had stopped… and the smoke did increase… the fire kind of took off a little bit,” Kear said, explaining the circumstances leading up to the explosion. The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine the exact sequence of events.
Community impact and safety measures
Neighbors in the area reported seeing thick smoke and noticing a strong odor, although many did not hear the blast. One resident expressed concern, stating, “I was concerned… why test the authorities?” The incident highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness and the effectiveness of the response from local authorities.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries during the incident, but no other injuries were reported. Air quality was monitored throughout the response, and officials confirmed that no harmful readings were detected at any time. Vitane Pharmaceuticals Incorporated issued a statement expressing their cooperation with investigators and emphasizing that safety remains their top priority.
