As the mercury rises to unprecedented levels, New York City is taking decisive action to protect its residents. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has announced a comprehensive set of emergency measures to combat the historic heat wave that has descended upon the city. With temperatures feeling as hot as 112 degrees, the administration is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers.
The heat wave, which began today, is expected to persist through the holiday weekend. In response, Mayor Mamdani has urged every resident to create a heat plan check on neighbors and loved ones, and take advantage of the city’s extensive resources. The administration has convened leaders across various city agencies to implement additional emergency measures, building upon the unprecedented Heat Emergency Plan announced earlier this week.
Expanded Cooling Centers and Outdoor Relief Options
To provide much-needed respite from the scorching heat, the city is expanding its network of cooling centers. Eight additional city buildings will be open from noon through midnight from July 3 to July 5, offering air-conditioned spaces for residents to escape the heat. Furthermore, 10 additional public library branches will serve as cooling centers throughout the holiday weekend.
The city’s outdoor pools are also extending their hours, with Olympic- and intermediate-sized pools remaining open until 8:30 p.m. This extension is half an hour longer than prior heat wave extensions and 1.5 hours later than normal operating days. Public beaches, equipped with lifeguards on duty, will provide additional relief options for New Yorkers seeking to beat the heat.
In a unique initiative, local firehouses will distribute free spray caps to adults aged 18 and older, transforming fire hydrants into makeshift sprinklers. This creative solution aims to offer immediate relief to those in need.
Intensified Outreach and Wellness Checks
The city is ramping up its outreach efforts to ensure that vulnerable populations are not left behind. The administration is adding 150 volunteers to the street outreach workforce, bringing the total to over 600 people. These volunteers will conduct intensive canvassing and outreach under Code Red from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. during all heat advisory days, connecting homeless neighbors to shelter, cooling centers, and essential supplies.
Mayor Mamdani is launching 21 COOL vans to provide wellness checks, medical care, and resources such as electrolytes and sunscreen. These vans, operated by NYC Health + Hospitals, will also offer meals, including vegetarian, kosher, and halal options. Medical providers will conduct in-home wellness checks on older adults to ensure their safety during the heat wave.
Energy Conservation and Community Support
In a bid to conserve energy during peak demand, Mayor Mamdani has asked all businesses to set their thermostats to 78 degrees. He has also encouraged all New Yorkers to conserve energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use and unplugging appliances. The city itself is doing its part by keeping municipal buildings at 78 degrees, dimming or turning off lights during peak electricity demand, and powering down nonessential equipment.
The Mayor’s office emphasized the importance of community support during this challenging time. “The best protection against extreme heat is air conditioning,” said Mayor Mamdani. “If you don’t have it at home, know now where you’ll go to stay cool. Check in on your neighbors, especially seniors, and if you see someone outside who appears to be in distress, call 311 so we can get help to them.”
NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Christina Farrell echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our most powerful tool isn’t a forecast or a cooling center. It’s a New Yorker. The neighbor who knocks on the door, the family member who calls to check in, the stranger who stops to help. This holiday week, we are asking every New Yorker to look out for one another so that no one faces this heat alone.”
New Yorkers can find additional relief at outdoor cool options like spray showers by visiting the city’s dedicated website. The city has also activated more than 2,200 LinkNYC kiosks to display real-time walking directions to the nearest cooling center within a 10-minute walk.
