A Severe Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for portions of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The warning is active until 8:00 PM EDT on 3 July 2026.
The affected areas include Northern Oneida, Yates, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Onondaga, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Madison, Southern Oneida, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, Delaware, Sullivan, Bradford, Susquehanna, Northern Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, and Southern Wayne.
Maximum heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 110 this afternoon and from 95 to 105 on Friday afternoon. Temperatures will remain very warm at night, limiting the cooling of non air-conditioned areas. Heat-related illnesses may increase significantly during this period.
In case of emergency, dial 911. Follow the guidance of the NWS and local authorities. To stay safe, do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures quickly. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed.
