The tranquility of a Fourth of July barbecue in Coney Island was shattered when gunfire erupted, injuring eight people, including four children. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. on July 4 has led to the arrest of Robert Smith 44, who faces serious charges.
The shooting took place in an apartment courtyard near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street where about 20 people had gathered for the celebration. Among the injured were a 6-year-old shot in the abdomen, a 7-year-old with injuries to both legs, a 12-year-old shot in the right knee, and a 14-year-old with a thigh wound. All eight victims are expected to survive, with a 21-year-old woman remaining in critical condition.

He has been charged with attempted murder in the first degree assault, criminal use of a firearm, weapons possession, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
