The summer season is upon us, and with it comes a unique set of challenges for parents and caregivers. In response, a dynamic partnership has been established in Carmel, bringing together the Carmel School District the Prevention Council of Putnam and the Carmel Communities That Care Coalition to equip parents with the knowledge and resources they need to keep their children safe and healthy.
This initiative recognizes that while summer is a time of excitement and milestones, it also presents higher-risk periods for alcohol and substance use, as well as unsafe decisions. The coalition aims to address these concerns proactively by empowering parents to communicate effectively with their teens.
Fostering open communication and trust
Kristin McConnell Executive Director of the Prevention Council of Putnam, emphasizes the critical role parents play in influencing teen behavior. She advises parents to engage in small, frequent conversations rather than relying on a single, intense discussion. ‘Talk early and often,’ McConnell urges. ‘Small, frequent conversations are more effective than one ‘big talk.’’
McConnell stresses the importance of maintaining open, calm, and nonjudgmental conversations to build trust and clearly convey expectations. She encourages parents to set firm boundaries, stating, ‘There will be no underage drinking or drug use.’ By fostering an environment of trust and open communication, parents can help their teens make safer choices.
Establishing clear rules and staying involved
In addition to open communication, McConnell recommends setting clear rules and curfews to provide structure and guidance for teens. She advises parents to stay involved in their children’s lives by checking in regularly and encouraging supervised activities. ‘Stay involved and check in regularly and encourage supervised activities such as sports, jobs, volunteer work and camps,’ McConnell suggests.
By staying engaged and supportive, parents can help their teens navigate the summer months safely and responsibly. McConnell also reminds parents to be vigilant for any sudden behavior changes, secrecy, new friend groups, or mood swings, as these can be indicators of potential issues.
Recognizing signs of concern
Parents are encouraged to pay close attention to any changes in their teen’s behavior, as these can serve as early warning signs. McConnell advises watching for secrecy, new friend groups, mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, or By being proactive and observant, parents can address potential concerns before they escalate.
The partnership between the Carmel School District, the Prevention Council of Putnam, and the Carmel Communities That Care Coalition demonstrates a commitment to the safety and well-being of Carmel’s youth. By providing parents with practical information and support, this initiative aims to create a safer and healthier summer for all.
