In the world of coffee, finding a balance between strong flavors and functional benefits can be a challenge. Ashland Huckabee, a native of Alabama now residing in Rochester, recognized this gap in the market two years ago. His solution? A unique coffee brand that combines the best of both worlds.
On Juneteenth, Huckabee launched GIANT Coffee Co. a direct-to-consumer brand that ships flavored beans, grounds, and functional add-ins nationwide. With vibrant packaging, an octopus logo, and innovative ideas, GIANT is carving out a distinct niche in the functional flavored coffee market.
From Alabama to Rochester: A Journey of Passion and Entrepreneurship
Huckabee, who serves as the founder, CEO, and sole employee of GIANT Coffee Co., wears many hats. In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavors, he works as an account manager at Mediavine, an ad management and technology company. Despite his busy schedule, Huckabee manages all aspects of GIANT, from manufacturing and supply lines to marketing.
Currently, GIANT’s operations are based in Texas, but Huckabee has his sights set on expanding to Rochester. “I do want GIANT to have a physical presence in Rochester one day, specifically around our fulfillment and operations,” Huckabee shared. “But that was not the practical place to begin, especially with limited capital. Starting online gave me a way to launch, prove the concept, reach customers beyond the city, and grow toward that larger vision.”
GIANT Coffee Co.: A Flavorful and Functional Experience
GIANT Coffee Co. offers two distinct flavors in both ground and whole beans, sourced primarily from the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua. Caramel Theory combines the sweet taste of caramel with pecans, pralines, and cream, while Midnight Reserve offers a rich blend of dark chocolate, blackberry, and raspberry jam.
Huckabee’s vision for GIANT extends beyond just selling coffee. He aims to prove that flavored coffee can be bold and intentional, not just a gimmick. “I want GIANT to prove that flavored coffee can be taken seriously,” Huckabee stated.
Functional Add-Ins: Enhancing the Coffee Experience
Initially, Huckabee envisioned GIANT as a company focused on selling functional coffee—coffee enhanced with bioactive ingredients for specific health benefits. However, manufacturing and logistics challenges led him to pivot. Instead, GIANT now sells add-in quick-dissolve powders to maintain the business’s functional aspect.
The current add-in available online, called Flow State includes L-theanine, an amino acid that works with caffeine to create a calm focus. These add-ins are neutral in taste and aroma, enriching the original product without altering the coffee’s flavor. Selling these add-ins separately from the coffee also gives consumers the option to choose whether they want them, setting GIANT apart from coffee brands that focus solely on function.
Expanding Reach and Building a Community
Since its launch, GIANT Coffee Co. has reached customers in 17 states and sold 104 items in total, including 70 bags of coffee and 27 limited-edition launch mugs. Huckabee’s primary marketing tool has been social media, which he uses to post short-form videos and photos of his operations to reach new audiences.
“My launch was great,” Huckabee said. “I had a lot of sales, more than I thought I would have. I had a lot of support from friends and family.” Huckabee hopes to turn GIANT into a national coffee brand and household name in flavored coffee. Being direct-to-consumer will remain central to the brand’s national expansion from Day 1, encouraging customer relationships early on through email marketing and special offerings to returning customers.
In addition to selling online, Huckabee hopes to partner with brick-and-mortar shops and cafes across Rochester to sell GIANT coffee to local consumers. “I love this place. It’s my home,” he said.
