A Severe Flood Watch is in effect for portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The alert is in effect through 2:00 AM on 22 July 2026.
The affected areas include Eastern Bergen, Eastern Essex, Eastern Passaic, Eastern Union, Hudson, Western Bergen, Western Essex, Western Passaic, Western Union, Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), and Southern Queens.
A Flood Watch indicates that conditions may develop that lead to flooding. This could include excessive runoff, flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may also occur in poor drainage and urban areas.
Multiple rounds of heavy downpours and thunderstorms are expected. Averaged rainfall totals will be between 1 and 2 inches, with localized swaths of 3 to 4 inches possible. Peak rainfall rates in the strongest storms could be 2-3 inches per hour.
