The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that multiple tornadoes touched down in New Jersey and New York during severe weather on Tuesday. The storms left a trail of damage, downed trees, and caused power outages, affecting numerous residents.
The confirmed tornadoes have been rated and their paths mapped, providing a clearer picture of the storm’s impact. Residents shared their experiences of the tense moments as warnings alerted them to the approaching danger.
Tornadoes in North Jersey
In North Jersey inspectors with the NWS confirmed at least three tornadoes. The first tornado was identified in the Stanhope and Mount Olive areas, while a second touched down in Lower Berkshire Valley. A third tornado was confirmed near Pine Brook which was also captured on camera near Top Golf in Parsippany around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
All three tornadoes were rated as EF-1 and were identified along the Interstate 80 corridor. The NWS believes these three tornadoes account for the activity observed on the I-80 corridor during the storm.
Damage and Resident Experiences
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, near Stanhope close to the Morris-Sussex county border, high winds brought down trees near Interstate 80 and Route 206. Trees and power lines were damaged, and many residents remained without power on Wednesday afternoon.
Residents described the tense moments as warnings appeared on their phones. Sabrina Petruccelli a local resident, said, “I was getting alerts on my phone, so I went down to the building to wait for my husband. Everybody was in the hallway and the lobby because they were scared.”
Jeff Paul the Morris County Office of Emergency Management Chief, expressed gratitude for the alerts that kept residents updated. He mentioned witnessing what he believed to be a tornado in the Parsippany area from the hurricane-proof 911 call center.
Tornado in South Jersey
In South Jersey the NWS confirmed an EF-0 tornado in Cape May. This tornado began as a waterspout before moving ashore around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. It caused a narrow path of tree damage before quickly dissipating.
