A tragic incident unfolded in Far Rockaway on Saturday afternoon, leaving two people dead and a suspect critically injured. The event began with a 911 call just before noon, setting off a chain of events that culminated in an explosion and a police shooting.
The incident took place at a rowhome located at 25-33 Ocean Crest Blvd. near Beach 25 Street. The NYPD responded to the scene after receiving a distressing call from the suspect’s wife, who reported that her husband had a history of mental illness and had allegedly harmed family members inside the home.
The Unfolding Crisis
Upon arrival, officers found the suspect’s wife outside the home, who warned them that her husband, 33-year-old Kegan Thomas was armed with a shotgun. She had heard gunshots and seen a body inside the residence. Police quickly established a perimeter around the property, anticipating a potentially dangerous situation.
As the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) prepared to enter the home around 12:15 p.m. a massive explosion rocked the property. Moments later, Thomas emerged from the burning home wearing a tactical vest and carrying a shotgun. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapon, Thomas did not comply, leading officers to open fire. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to Jamaica Hospital where he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
The Aftermath and Investigation
Inside the home, investigators discovered the bodies of two family members. The exact cause of their deaths remains undetermined as authorities continue their investigation. The FDNY managed to contain the fire, preventing any further injuries or damage to nearby properties.
Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh of the NYPD stated that Thomas had no prior criminal history or documented mental health issues with the department. The incident was captured on body-worn camera footage, and the investigation is ongoing under the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division.
Community Response and Support
The incident has left the Far Rockaway community in shock. Local elected officials, including Assemblymember Khaleel M. Anderson and State Sen. James Sanders Jr. visited the scene to offer support and assistance. Anderson emphasized the need for grief counseling, therapy, and other support services for the affected community.
“As we learn more about the victims, who did not make it, we will certainly work with the community to figure out anything that the community needs, with relation to grief counseling, therapy, support services, vigils, resources,” Anderson said. He also noted that efforts were underway to provide clothing and food to those affected, with help from local churches and community organizations.
Sanders expressed concern about the extent of the damage to the home and neighboring properties. He assured that the suspect’s wife was safe and in the care of other family members. “She is in safe hands,” he said.
The incident has highlighted the need for mental health support and community resources in the aftermath of such tragic events. As the investigation continues, the Far Rockaway community comes together to heal and support those affected by this devastating incident.
