United for the Troops, a nonprofit founded by Jim and the late Patty Rathschmidt, has been sending care packages to servicemen and women for nearly two decades. Now, the organization is in search of a new home to continue its mission.
The story of United for the Troops began with a personal journey. When the Rathschmidts’ son, Luke, was deployed in Iraq, they started sending him care packages. The positive impact of these packages led them to expand their efforts, creating an organization that has since shipped 40,000 boxes to service members. “We support these brave military personnel by sending them parcels they miss most while deployed,” said Jim Rathschmidt.
United for the Troops: A Legacy of Support
The organization has been operating out of the former Putnam Motors building at 34 Gleneida Avenue in Carmel. However, after nearly 20 years the building is set to be repurposed or demolished by Putnam County. This has left United for the Troops in need of a new space to continue their work.
Jim Rathschmidt expressed the importance of finding a suitable location. “It would be ideal to remain in the Carmel-Mahopac area, but anywhere in Putnam County will suffice,” he said. The organization requires approximately 2,000 square feet of space to operate effectively.
The Impact of United for the Troops
United for the Troops has been a beacon of support for military personnel overseas. The organization sends boxes filled with letters, cards, snacks, and toiletries, providing a touch of home for those serving abroad. “It brings us such joy knowing that our military men and women are receiving a box filled with letters and cards along with snacks and toiletries from home,” said Patty Rathschmidt before her passing last year.
The organization’s volunteers are the backbone of its operations. “Our volunteers are our real heroes because United for the Troops couldn’t exist without them,” Patty Rathschmidt once noted. The volunteers’ dedication has allowed the organization to grow tremendously since its humble beginnings.

Looking ahead, United for the Troops plans to ship 1,000 boxes over the next two months. The organization’s mission remains steadfast: to ensure that no military personnel goes without the simple comforts of home. As they search for a new location, the community’s support will be crucial in helping them continue their vital work.
