A Severe Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Putnam and Westchester counties in New York, as well as Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven, and New London counties in Connecticut. The warning is active until noon EDT on September 13, 2026, as issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Upton.
This alert indicates that flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with an expected rainfall rate of 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding may occur in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poor drainage and low-lying areas.
In case of an emergency, dial 911. The NWS advises residents to turn around and not drown when encountering flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Move to higher ground now and be aware of your surroundings. Do not drive on flooded roads. Report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the NWS when you can do so safely.
