The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced on May 14 that excavators uncovered a substantial, previously unknown rock-cut passage near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, on the southern edge of Jerusalem. Found while preparing ground for a residential development, the cavity grew into a long corridor as archaeologists removed accumulated debris. The find has attracted attention because of its scale, the quality of the stonework and its proximity to archaeological sites associated with the biblical-era Kingdom of Judah.
The exposed tunnel measures about 164 feet in length, approximately 16 feet in height and roughly 10 feet in width. Excavation directors Sivan Mizrahi and Zinovi Matskevich described the discovery as unexpected. Although the tunnel lies only a few hundred meters from a public Iron Age building in Arnona and the multi-period settlement at Tel Ramat Rachel, researchers emphasize that no direct evidence yet ties the passage to the First Temple period.
Physical characteristics and initial observations
The tunnel is hewn from bedrock and shows evidence of deliberate, careful shaping; the IAA noted that the rock-cutting was executed meticulously. As the excavation progressed, teams found the passage partly collapsed in sections and filled with layers of soil that appear to have accumulated over centuries. These deposits have preserved fragments and debris on the tunnel floor that may offer clues about the activity that took place there.
Dimensions and workmanship
The corridor’s proportions — about 164 feet long, 16 feet high and roughly 10 feet wide — suggest a significant investment in labor and planning. The IAA statement pointed out that whoever carved the tunnel had both the resources and the technical know-how to execute such an undertaking. Portions of the ceiling display a shaft that researchers think could have served for ventilation or access during cutting.
Condition and stratigraphy
Excavators removed compacted soil layers which, according to the IAA, accumulated over hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of years. Because parts of the passage are still collapsed, the interior has not yet yielded all possible data. The preserved stratigraphy on the tunnel floor includes what appears to be quarrying debris, offering an initial line of inquiry into whether the tunnel served as a working face for extracting chalk or building stone.
Interpretations and scientific questions
At this stage, specialists are weighing several plausible explanations for the tunnel’s original function. One working hypothesis is that it relates to quarrying activity: teams note evidence consistent with extracting a chalk layer used for producing lime or raw stone. The presence of a ceiling shaft could be compatible with ventilation during labor-intensive quarrying or with hoisting materials between levels.
Why not an ancient water channel?
Experts have largely discounted the idea that the passage formed part of an ancient water system. The profile, internal features and lack of certain hydraulic installations do not align with known water conduits in the region. Another possibility under consideration is that the project was never completed — that quarrying or tunneling ceased and the passage was abandoned before full use.
Context within the broader landscape
The tunnel lies close to two significant archaeological loci. A public building dated to the Iron Age (First Temple period) stands in the Arnona area, while Tel Ramat Rachel contains remains spanning from the Iron Age through the Islamic period. Excavations conducted in the area in 2026 yielded seal impressions and other administrative indicators that pointed to governmental activity in antiquity, but the IAA stresses that no direct link has yet been established between those earlier finds and the newly discovered passage.
Amit Re’em, the Jerusalem district archaeologist at the IAA, framed the discovery as part of an ongoing pattern of new revelations across the city: “This city never ceases to surprise,” he said, noting that archaeologists continue to uncover unexpected structures as urban development and research intersect. The IAA team will continue excavation and analysis to determine the tunnel’s date and purpose, using stratigraphic study, material analysis and careful recording to build a fuller interpretation.
Next steps in the investigation
Fieldwork will proceed cautiously because collapsed sections still obscure parts of the passage. Specialists in geoarchaeology, quarrying techniques and ancient construction methods are expected to collaborate on-site. Laboratory examination of recovered debris and any artifacts will help refine chronologies. While press inquiries have been directed to the IAA, the organization has reiterated that definitive conclusions will await additional excavation and scientific testing.
Until the research yields clearer answers, the tunnel remains an intriguing addition to Jerusalem’s complex archaeological record: a substantial engineered space carved into bedrock that raises questions about labor, industry and planning in the ancient landscape surrounding Ramat Rachel.
