The tournament, held from June 12 to June 15 at various venues in New York’s Southern Tier, showcased intense competition across six classes. Among the standout stories was Averill Park‘s historic achievement, with both their baseball and softball teams claiming state titles.
The championship weekend began with semifinal matchups on Friday, June 12featuring some of the state’s top teams. The action took place at Mirabito Stadium in BinghamtonBinghamton University in Vestaland Union-Endicott High School in Endicott. The tournament introduced a new rule this year: a double first basewhich added an interesting dynamic to the games.
Averill Park’s historic double triumph
The most compelling storyline of the weekend was Averill Park‘s remarkable double triumph. Both their baseball and softball teams secured state championships, making them one of the standout schools of the tournament. This achievement highlighted the depth of talent and the strong athletic programs at Averill Park.
In the Class A baseball semifinals, Averill Park faced Grand Island at Binghamton University. The team’s performance was a testament to their skill and determination, setting the stage for their eventual championship victory. In Class AAdefending champions Horseheads faced West Genesee in a highly anticipated semifinal at Mirabito Stadium. The matchup between Cornwall Central and Kennedy was another highlight, with both teams vying for a spot in the championship game. The Class B semifinals featured Medina and Notre Dameas well as Chester and Center Morichesall aiming to advance to the final round.
The Class C semifinals included former state champion Saratoga Central Catholicwho faced Tuckahoe. The matchup between Kendall and Ticonderoga was another notable contest, with both teams looking to secure their place in the championship game. In Class Ddefending champions Oriskany faced Fillmorewhile Duanesburg took on Bridgehampton in a competitive semifinal.
Championship weekend and the road ahead
The championship games took place on Saturday, June 15with a full day of state title action across multiple sites. At Binghamton Universitythe Class B championship opened the day, followed by Class AAA and concluding with the Class AA championship. Mirabito Stadium hosted the Class AClass Cand Class D championships, with each game showcasing the best of high school baseball.
The tournament was a testament to the talent and dedication of New York’s high school athletes. As State Coordinator Al Roy noted, ‘Anticipating another great year of State Championship baseball in the Binghamton area. This will be the first year utilizing a double first base, I’ll be interested to see how our student athletes adjust to this rule change.’ The introduction of the double first base added a new dimension to the games, and the athletes’ ability to adapt was a key factor in their success.
