The brand-new Highmark Stadium opened its doors to a thunderous Friday night as the Buffalo Bills faced the Detroit Lions. The atmosphere was electric, with fireworks heralding the start of what the franchise has humorously dubbed “the House that Allen built.” From the first snap, quarterback Josh Allen demonstrated why the moniker fits, mixing precise throws with hard-running bursts that left the Lions scrambling.
Allen’s historic five-touchdown performance
Allen’s night was a masterclass in the dual-threat quarterback role. He connected on three aerial scores, delivering a 43-yard strike to a wide-open Josh Palmer and finding tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox for short touchdowns that capped a dominant first half. Adding to the aerial barrage, Allen punched in two one-yard runs, his first regular-season rushing score arriving just under six minutes into the opening quarter. He finished 20-of-31 for 248 yards and surged for 72 rushing yards, securing his fourth career five-TD outing and tying the NFL’s all-time list at 18th with Jim Taylor.
Lions’ offensive struggles and injury setbacks
Detroit entered the contest with a battered offensive line, missing starters Blake Miller (knee) and Christian Mahogany (hip). The deficit was evident early: two early sacks on quarterback Jared Goff and a snapped ball that sailed over his head set a grim tone. Though the Lions rallied from a 21-0 hole to narrow the margin to 34-24, they could not sustain momentum. Goff posted 327 passing yards and four touchdowns, while wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown hauled in nine catches for 142 yards and two scores. Nevertheless, a trio of three-and-out drives in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a tipped pass from Deone Walker and a stop on running back Jahmyr Gibbs, sealed their fate.
Key injuries and the road ahead
Both squads dealt with notable injuries during the game. For the Bills, defensive lineman Ed Oliver sustained a hip injury in pre-game warm-ups, leaving the line with only four healthy starters. Detroit’s defensive back Avonte Maddox left after a collision in the end zone, and the Lions also lost WR DJ Moore to a shoulder and head injury. Despite these setbacks, the Bills secured their 90th regular-season win, making Allen one of only four quarterbacks to achieve that mark within nine seasons. The Lions will look to rebound when they host the New York Jets on September 27, while Buffalo’s next challenge is a clash with the New England Patriots on the same date.
