The Rochester International Jazz Festival is back for its 23rd editiontransforming downtown Rochester into a melodic paradise from June 19 to June 27. With 19 venues within walking distance, this year’s festival promises an unparalleled musical journey featuring close to 200 artists.
From ticketed headliners at Kodak Hall to 174 Club Pass shows and free outdoor concertsthe festival offers something for every jazz enthusiast. Additionally, artist-led jam sessions and mid-day jazz workshops provide unique opportunities for both performers and attendees to immerse themselves in the world of jazz.
The Rising Stars of Jazz
Kicking off the festival is Shebada contemporary quintet that made waves at last year’s event. Comprised of Guelph artists Claire Voy and Mark Ciccio Spagnoloalong with a trio of multi-instrumentalists, Shebad brings a youthful energy and spiritually heartfelt lyricism to the stage. Their unique sound and dynamic performances make them a must-see act at The Duke on June 19.
Another standout act is Raul Midóna jazz guitarist who lost his sight in infancy but has since become a master of his craft. Known for his genre-blending approach, Midón infuses his music with elements of folk, alt-pop, and Latin music. His performances at Kilbourn Hall on June 22 are sure to captivate audiences with his versatility and expert songwriting.
The Legends of Jazz
Bob James Trio takes the stage at Kodak Hall on June 20, bringing a wealth of experience and innovation to the festival. At 86 years old, James has a career spanning 50 LPs and is best known for his inventive musical approaches. His composition Nautilus has become a hip-hop staplesampled in numerous songs, showcasing his ability to evolve with the times.
The dynamic duo of Makoto Ozone and Tommy Smith will mesmerize audiences at Kilbourn Hall on June 21. With over 30 years of friendship and collaboration, their piano-saxophone duo offers a harmonious blend of Japanese and Scottish musical traditions. Their performances are a testament to their expertise and musical chemistry.
The Eclectic Mix
Hiromi’s Sonicwonder brings an electro-jazz experience to Kodak Hall on June 23. Led by jazz pianist Hiromi Ueharathe quartet is known for its technicolor sound and groovy hyperspace. With two full-length albums under their belt, Sonicwonder promises an exciting and enigmatic performance.
Cécile McLorin Salvant graces the stage at Kodak Hall on June 24, offering a multifaceted performance that blends classic jazz with modern beats. A three-time Grammy winner, Salvant is renowned for her storytelling and adaptability. Her performance precedes the release of her new album, With Every Breath I Takeadding an element of anticipation to her set.
Local talent shines with the Laura Dubin Trio at Hatch Recital Hall on June 25. Dubin’s technical prowess and modern twist on classic jazz make her a standout performer. Supported by her partner Antonio H. Guerrero on drums and Sam Weber on bass, the trio delivers a powerful and intricate musical experience.
The festival concludes with Toubab Krewe at The Duke on June 26 and DK Harrell at the Jazz Street Stage on June 27. Toubab Krewe’s global influences and Harrell’s blues roots provide a diverse and exhilarating finale to the festival.
