Among the visitors were Amherst residents Gina Griffo and her mother, Dena Lunetta, longtime Bills fans who made the trip to see the new stadium. Griffo expressed her concerns about the affordability of attending games, particularly for families. “This is a blue-collar market — you would say — we’re working people…and for the amount they are charging…” Griffo said, highlighting the financial strain on average fans.
Griffio pointed out that the cost of attending a game for a family of four can approach $1,000 a significant expense for many. “If you have a family of four…you’re looking at close to $1,000…to come to a game…and I don’t know any families that can afford that,” she said. Despite the high costs, Griffo and Lunetta remain hopeful that they will find a way to attend a game in the future, perhaps by planning ahead or taking advantage of special events.
Alternative Ways to Experience the Stadium
Lunetta suggested that the stadium might offer alternative ways for fans to experience the venue, such as tours or special event days. “We’ll just have to think about how we are going to get inside there…but maybe they’ll do tours…maybe they’ll have special event days…which should be great,” she said, expressing optimism about finding more affordable ways to enjoy the new stadium.
Jaden Tomczack, a Buffalo native now living in North Carolina, was also in attendance. Tomczack, who was back in the area for a family wedding, praised the stadium’s appearance but echoed the concerns about affordability. “The prices are ridiculous,” Tomczack said. “You’re supposed to go and have a good time…you’re not supposed to break the bank.” Tomczack and his wife are expecting their first child and hope to return for a future game, stocking up on Bills gear for the next generation of fans.
Tailgating as a Cost-Effective Alternative
Despite the high costs of attending a game, many fans remain committed to the Bills and find alternative ways to enjoy the game-day experience. Marilyn Cutting, a Buffalo native visiting from Florida, attended many games at the old stadium and stopped to admire the new venue. “It’s gorgeous from the outside,” Cutting said, expressing her admiration for the stadium’s design.
Cutting believes that dedicated fans will find a way to make it work, even if it means tailgating in the parking lot. “You’re going to have your tailgate parties and have a good time,” she said, emphasizing the importance of the social aspect of game day. Tomczack agreed, stating that tailgating can be “just as much fun as in the stadium,” highlighting the value of the community experience.
