As the summer sun shines brightly, Hunter’s Point South Park in Long island City beckons visitors with its stunning views and vibrant atmosphere. Once an abandoned post-industrial area, this park has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming one of New York City’s most sought-after destinations. Wellness and Fitness on the Waterfront

The park’s waterfront location provides the perfect setting for a variety of wellness and fitness activities. The Hunters Point Parks Conservancy has curated a series of events that encourage visitors to embrace a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the scenic views.

Yoga Sessions

Every Sunday and Tuesday at 7 p.m., yoga enthusiasts can gather for a rejuvenating session led by instructor Joy Chen. Held at the oval on the corner of Center Boulevard and Borden Avenue these sessions offer a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Registration is available through Eventbrite.

Outdoor Fitness Classes

In collaboration with The Trinity NYC a new gym from the Clann Health team, the conservancy hosts an outdoor fitness class every Tuesday at 6 p.m. This 45-minute workout is designed for all fitness levels and promises to leave participants feeling energized and productive. As their Eventbrite page states, it’s a “great way to Feel Better, have More Energy and be More Productive!”

Zumba Sessions

For those who prefer to dance their way to fitness, the conservancy offers free outdoor Zumba classes every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Led by instructor Bobby Albanez these sessions are perfect for beginners and provide a fun way to stay active. The classes are held at the oval of the park, on the corner of Center Boulevard and Borden Avenue. Registration is also available through Eventbrite.

Artistic Pursuits and Environmental Awareness

The park also serves as a canvas for artistic expression and a platform for environmental education. Throughout the summer, visitors can participate in a variety of artistic and educational events.

Watercolor Classes

On July 8 and 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., art instructor Donna Levinstone will lead a free watercolor class on the LIC waterfront. Participants can unleash their creativity and paint the scenic surroundings. The class will be held on the corner of Center Boulevard and 47th Road. Registration is available through Eventbrite.

City of Water Day

On July 25 the Newtown Creek AllianceHunters Point Park Conservancy and Long Island City Community Boathouse will host City of Water Day a celebration of New York City’s waterways. The event will feature a variety of activities, including a walk-up public paddle, a creek animals exhibit, and a volunteer riprap cleanup.

From 12 to 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy a walk-up public paddle to kayak on the water. The paddle is first-come, first-served, so early arrival is recommended. From 12 to 4 p.m., the Newtown Creek Alliance will host a drop-in creek animals exhibit inside the Queens Landing Boathouse where guests can learn about water quality issues, pollution, and restoration efforts.

From 1 to 3 p.m., the Hunters Point Park Conservancy will host a volunteer riprap cleanup. Participants will discuss the role of ripraps versus bulkheads for resilience, the impact of plastic waste on waterways, and the types of trash found in the water. A discussion on microplastics in the environment will follow. The cleanup will begin promptly at 1 p.m. Registration for the cleanup can be found on the Eventbrite page.
