The Pine Bush softball team has concluded an extraordinary season, making history and leaving an indelible mark on their community. Under the guidance of coach Alyssa Valente, the team reached the Class AAA state championship game, a testament to their dedication and skill. The journey was filled with memorable moments, including a thrilling 12-inning championship game and the heartwarming traditions that bonded the team together.

Valente, in only her second season as head coach, was named Co-Coach of the Year by the New york state Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS). Sharing this honor with Lancaster’s Richard Winiatowski, Valente’s leadership was pivotal in Pine Bush’s success. The team’s journey culminated in a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Lancaster in the state championship game on June 13 in Binghamton.

The Road to the State Championship

The Pine Bush softball team’s season was a rollercoaster of emotions and triumphs. The team’s historic run began with a dominant performance in the Section 9 Class AAA championship, where they defeated Newburgh 17-5. This victory set the stage for their regional championship against Clarkstown South, which they won to advance to the state semifinals at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton.

The semifinals were a testament to the team’s resilience. Facing a two-hour rain and lightning delay, the Bushmen mounted a remarkable sixth-inning comeback with six consecutive two-out hits. Key contributions from Payton Croce and Emma Boffalo secured a 7-3 victory in a game that lasted over four hours. This win propelled them to the state championship game, where they faced the defending champions, Lancaster.

The Seniors’ Legacy

The senior players—Avery Ogden, Payton Croce, and sisters Emma and Ava Boffalo—have been the heart of the Pine Bush softball team since. Their journey together began with a Little League district title, and they have continued to refine their skills and teamwork ever since. The seniors’ leadership and camaraderie were instrumental in the team’s success this season.

One of the team’s cherished traditions was the pregame rice krispie treats made by Croce’s grandmother. These treats became a symbol of good luck and team spirit. “They are outstanding,” said first baseman Emma Boffalo. “Everyone had to have at least one, and some people had at least three or four.” The treats were a staple at home games and even made an appearance at the state semifinals, albeit in a melted state due to the heat.

Avery Ogden’s Remarkable Performance

Avery Ogden, the team’s ace pitcher, was a standout performer throughout the season. With an impressive 18-3 record and a 1.20 ERA, Ogden earned first-team all-state honors from NYSSCOGS. Her complete game performance in the state championship, where she pitched all 12 innings, was a testament to her determination and skill. Ogden’s two-run single in the top of the third inning tied the game at 3-3, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure.

Ogden’s commitment to the team was evident in her willingness to pitch the entire game. “It’s kind of been an unspoken thing the whole season that I would pitch the whole game,” Ogden said. Her resilience and determination inspired her teammates and left a lasting impact on the program.

The Community’s Support

The Pine Bush community rallied behind the softball team, providing unwavering support throughout their historic run. The team’s journey brought back memories of their Little League championships, where community celebrations were a highlight. “Having the fire trucks, the police, and the community support to and from the school, it was awesome,” said coach Valente. This support was a source of motivation for the team and a reminder of the bond they share with their community.

As the seniors prepare to move on to their collegiate careers, they leave behind a legacy of excellence and teamwork. Avery Ogden will continue her softball career at Pace University, while Payton Croce will play at Monmouth University. Both Emma and Ava Boffalo are set to play Division I soccer at Manhattan University. Their journey together has been a testament to the power of friendship, determination, and the pursuit of excellence.
