The Michigan Street Bridge in Buffalo, N.Y. has been temporarily closed to both vehicles and pedestrians due to an unexpected issue caused by the extreme heat. The fireboat crew, led by Captain Michael Kick spent approximately five hours spraying water from the Buffalo River onto the bridge. Kick estimated that they used about 3 million gallons of water during their operation. Despite these efforts, the bridge remained stuck on Thursday, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees.

Kick highlighted the unusual nature of their task, stating, “Now, with the temperature extremes, we go from breaking ice to throwing water because it’s too hot.” This shift in operations underscores the impact of extreme weather conditions on the city’s infrastructure.

The closure of the Michigan Street Bridge has caused some inconvenience, particularly for local businesses and residents. Bill Casale who manages Buffalo RiverWorks expressed his concerns about the timing of the closure, especially with the Fourth of July weekend approaching.

“It’s obviously very unfortunate news,” Casale said. “RiverWorks is a very busy establishment; it’s holiday time again, these things have happened in the past. We’re hoping this will be a short-term issue for us and we can get back to normal business.” He emphasized that the situation is not anyone’s fault, calling it “a freak of nature with this heat.”

Despite the closure, the Outer Harbor and Buffalo RiverWorks can still be accessed using the Ohio Street Bridge. This alternative route helps mitigate the inconvenience caused by the Michigan Street Bridge closure.
