The festivities kicked off with the arrival of an international fleet at Sandy Hook, a location steeped in historical significance. It was here that George Washington’s army drove the British from New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. The area is also home to the country’s oldest continuously lit lighthouse, which has guided mariners since 1764 and is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.
The International Fleet and Naval Review
Approximately 20 nations have dispatched their premier tall ships to participate in the celebration, with vessels arriving from as far away as Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. The legendary U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle, acquired as a war reparation from Nazi Germany, will lead the official parade of ships. This iconic vessel is the only active square-rigged sailing vessel in federal service and has been sailed by every Coast Guard Academy cadet.

The Nimitz, the most iconic serving aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet, brings unparalleled historical significance to what will be the largest international maritime spectacle in U.S. history. Named after World War II Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the carrier has played pivotal roles in missions ranging from Operation Desert Storm to Operation Inherent Resolve.
Vice Adm. Doug Perry, commander of the U.S. 2nd Fleet, emphasized the importance of the Nimitz’s participation, stating that it brings a legendary piece of American naval history and maritime dominance to the heart of the celebration.
