The shores of New Jersey are witnessing a historic convergence of maritime heritage and international camaraderie as tall ships from around the globe gather to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. This monumental event, known as Sail4th 250 marks a significant milestone in the nation’s history, drawing vessels from approximately 20 countries, including Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.
The festivities kicked off with a spectacular military flyover led by the Navy’s Blue Angels, followed by the French Air Force acrobatic squad Patrouille de France, which released a stream of red, white, and blue over the Hudson River and New York Harbor. This aerial display set the stage for the grand parade of tall ships, which began at 7 a.m. ET on Saturday, sailing north on the Hudson River from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to the George Washington Bridge.
The Significance of Sandy Hook
The event’s focal point is Sandy Hook a location rich in historical significance. It was here that George Washington’s army drove the British from New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. The area is also home to the country’s oldest continuously lit lighthouse, which has guided maritime navigators since 1764. Today, Sandy Hook is preserved as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area a 27,000-acre national park that spans New York and New Jersey and welcomes over 9 million visitors annually.
Iconic Vessels and International Crews
The centerpiece of the parade is the legendary U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle the only active square-rigged sailing vessel in federal service. Acquired as a war reparation from Nazi Germany, the Eagle has been sailed by every Coast Guard Academy cadet. Joining the Eagle are other historic tall ships, including the Bowdoin and the Lynx, which have been arriving in New York Harbor over the past several days.
The presence of international crews represents more than just a tourist attraction. It is a testament to the strength of global security alliances. As noted by Governor Mikie Sherrill, a former naval officer, “America never fights alone because we fight alongside our friends and allies. Today, it’s a joy to be here to celebrate with all of our allies and friends.”
Planning and Preparation
Planning for the Sail4th 250 tribute has been underway since April 2026, involving coordination with foreign military attachés. The main festivities include the Tall Ships Parade, International Naval Review, and a coordinated International Aerial Review. These events are expected to draw thousands of spectators, with security checkpoints and screenings in place for designated viewing areas along the Hudson River.
The celebrations extend beyond New Jersey, with events taking place across the nation. President Donald Trump kicked off the weekend with a speech at Mount Rushmore, followed by a fireworks display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Despite weather delays, the event proceeded with Trump delivering remarks at 11 p.m. ET, followed by fireworks.
