The basketball community is in mourning following the tragic death of Kinu Rochford a former college basketball player who went on to play internationally. The 35-year-old was fatally shot during a basketball tournament in Harlem late on Friday night, according to authorities.
The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. at the basketball court behind 70 Lenox Ave. Rochford was one of three individuals struck by gunfire. The other victims, a 28-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
The legacy of Kinu Rochford
Kinu Rochford a native of Brooklyn began his college basketball journey at the Globe Institute of Technology before transferring to Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). As an FDU Knight he made a significant impact, appearing in 53 games and averaging 14.8 points per game. His contributions earned him the FDU George Braun Leadership Award in for his exemplary leadership skills.
Rochford’s international career spanned across the NetherlandsFranceEnglandSwitzerlandIceland and Lithuania. His former school, FDU, expressed their devastation at his passing, describing him as a standout Knight and leader who built a legacy in Hackensack.

The tournament, organized by Kingdome Basketball was meant to foster unity and sportsmanship. In a social media post, the organizers acknowledged the tragic loss and condemned the violence, stating, The Kingdome Games were founded to unite our community through faith, fellowship, and sportsmanship. We unequivocally condemn all forms of violence and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe and positive environment for our youth and community.
The organizers have announced that updates regarding future games for the remainder of the season will be delayed as they grapple with this devastating event.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
