While the paid Club Pass shows often steal the spotlight, the free performances on Jazz Street are not to be missed. These shows feature high school and college jazz bands, providing a platform for local talent and supporting the arts in Rochester’s schools.
The Rise of Young Talent
The School of the Arts High School Jazz Band closed out the free shows on Day 2, delivering a performance that left the audience in awe. These young musicians took on complex jazz pieces and solos with remarkable skill, demonstrating the high level of musical education in Rochester’s schools. The band recently competed in New York City, and their performance at the festival showcased their talent and dedication.
High school jazz bands offer a unique opportunity to hear classic pieces like “April in Paris” alongside more contemporary songs like “The Jazz Police.” These performances not only entertain but also inspire the next generation of musicians. Legendary Performances
Bob James, a jazz fusion legend, returned to the festival with his trio, captivating the audience at Kodak Hall. Known for his iconic songs “Angela” and “Nautilus,” James has made a significant impact on the music world, with his compositions frequently sampled in hip-hop. His ability to embrace musical evolution and connect with diverse audiences makes him a standout performer.
The Dynamic Trio
James’ trio featured bassist Michael Palazzolo and drummer John Mahon from the Elton John Band. Mahon’s calculated and flexible style brought a new dynamic to the group, showcasing James’ willingness to let his band members shine. The trio’s performance included a surprise cover of “Take Me to the Alley” by Gregory Porter, sung by Mahon himself—a moment that highlighted the unique chemistry within the group.

Tarantino, a Juilliard graduate and renowned saxophonist, led her quartet through a set of post-bop tunes, showcasing their exceptional musical synergy. The quartet’s performance included original compositions like “Provoking Luck” and “Portrait of a Shadow,” as well as a mesmerizing rendition of “Inside Looking Out.”
