The Fresh Pond Crematory in Middle Village also known as the U.S. Columbarium Co. has become a pivotal site during the coronavirus pandemic. As the city grapples with the ongoing health crisis, this historic crematory has been operating around the clock to serve the needs of grieving families.
Located on Mount Olivet Crescent between Eliot and Metropolitan Avenues the crematory has a rich history dating back to Dec. 5, 1885. It was the first facility of its kind in New York state developed on 13 former farmland lots. The crematory is situated near Lutheran/All Faiths Cemetery and Mount Olivet Cemetery reflecting a time when large portions of Queens were redeveloped as burial grounds.
The Evolution of Fresh Pond Crematory
The crematory, often referred to as Crematory Hill has evolved significantly over the decades. Wings were added between 1904 and 1929 to accommodate the growing number of niches for urns and to include a chapel for prayer services. The building features terrazzo flooring, stained-glass windows, grand columns, and other ornate features that reflect its historic significance.
Today, the crematory houses over 16,000 niches containing the remains of more than 40,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds and faiths across New York City. Notable figures such as financier J.P. Morgan and New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig were cremated here, adding to its storied past.
Memorials and Community Events
The crematory has expanded its offerings to include special niches like the Hall of Serenity and the Hall of Flowers as well as a memorial space for families who have lost an infant. Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial was created, featuring a statue of a firefighter and flag pins for each of the approximately 343 members of the New York City Fire Department lost in the attacks.
Fresh Pond Crematory also hosts a variety of memorial events for holidays such as ChristmasMother’s Day and Father’s Day. In recent years, it has expanded to include musical and artistic performances to promote the site’s history and preservation, fostering a sense of community and remembrance.
